Domaine De La Pépière

by Diego Aliste

This iconic producer has been crafting wines since Marc Ollivier took over the estate in 1984, bringing a thoughtful approach to the granite-rich terroir of the Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine appellation. From the beginning, Marc's vision was rooted in traditional farming practices, using no chemicals or synthetic fertilizers, even when these were standard in the region. Over time, he expanded this commitment, converting the estate to certified organic farming in the early 2000s and incorporating biodynamic practices shortly thereafter.

By the mid-2000s, Pépière had grown into one of the region’s most important wineries, both in terms of quality and influence. Marc's methods became a benchmark, particularly his single-vineyard bottlings like Clisson and Monnières-Saint-Fiacre, which helped elevate Muscadet from a simple quaffing wine to one that could age and express complexity. These wines, made from old Melon de Bourgogne vines rooted deep in granite and gneiss, are never fined or filtered, allowing the raw purity of the terroir to shine.

Rémi Branger, joined Marc in 2007 and has since taken over day-to-day operations alongside Gwénaëlle Croix. This transition has ensured Pépière’s legacy continues, blending reverence for tradition with a dynamic vision for the future.

Pépière’s wines have become foundational to the Louis Dressner Selections portfolio. When the portfolio was taking shape in the late 1980s and early 1990s, it sought producers who expressed terroir with minimal intervention—wines that spoke of their place and the people behind them. Pépière was a perfect fit, with Marc’s commitment to organic farming, indigenous yeast fermentation, and minimal manipulation in the cellar aligning perfectly with the ethos of Louis Dressner. These values have inspired a new generation of winemakers in the Loire and beyond.

Each bottle is a snapshot of place, people, and time. It’s no wonder these wines have inspired countless sommeliers, collectors, and casual drinkers to stock their cellars with Pépière’s treasures, ready to be opened on those perfect sunny days when their vibrant energy feels most at home.
